Sure, overtime is great for your paycheck, but at some point you have to ask which is more valuable, the extra money you receive or the time you could be spending on things outside of work. Rep. Martha Roby (R-AL) asked that question earlier this year when she introduced H.R. 1406, The Working Families Flexibility Act of 2013. This legislation was passed on May 8 and effectively allows employers to offer private-sector employees the choice of paid time off in lieu of cash wages for overtime hours worked. Here are some highlights of this act: Employees may choose whether they want comp time or cash and cannot be forced to take comp time. They also have the ability to change their mind at any time. Employees can accrue up to 160 hours of comp time each year.  An employer would be required to pay cash wages for any unused time at the end of the year. Workers are free to ‘cash out’ their accrued comp time whenever they choose to do so. All existing protections in the Fair Labor Standards Act are maintained, including the 40-hour workweek and how overtime compensation is accrued. Since 1938 when the Fair Labor Standards Act was passed, private-sector employees (those not working for government entities) have been compensated for overtime worked through cash payments. This ensured that employees would be fairly compensated for overtime, but didn’t take into account that there might be another option for compensating employees for overtime. It may seem short sighted to have passed legislation prohibiting any overtime compensation other than cash, but there was also a much slower pace of life in those days. Looking back just 40 or so years to 1975, only 47 percent of moms were part of our workforce. Now in 2013, that number is at 71 percent. To really put it in perspective, think about the fact that 8.5 million workers are single parents, one in three undergrads work full time and 57 percent of military spouses are part of the workforce. I would be willing to bet that to some of these millions of workers, paid time off might be more valuable than the cash compensation.

If you are an equity analyst, you may estimate a firm’s future enterprise value. Estimation can also help with decision-making. Here is an example: let us say we are evaluating a business decision; we want to open a new McDonald’s in our city. To breakeven, we need to generate $500,000 in sales. There are several McDonalds’ stores already, which means we are not going to get many customers. Given this constraint, let us say for the sake of argument, we deduced that each visitor needs to spend $150 to breakeven. Yikes! We just identified a flaw in the investment thesis. A typical McDonald’s customer spends $8; getting customers to spend $150 per visit is a big stretch. Here is what interviewers would consider as a top notch answer to an estimation question: Logical plan of action that is easily understood. Interviewers want to feel confident (and you should feel confident too) that you have a clear plan when solving an ambiguous estimation problem. Good candidates communicate a plan that not only gets them to the right answer but also easy for the listener to follow along. Communication skills. Interviewers do not just want to hear the answer. They also want to hear the thinking too. So candidates who silently solve a problem on their own and resurface in five minutes will not do well. Communicating one’s thoughts is critical to sharing knowledge and gaining buy-in to one’s approach. Choose reasonable assumptions with clear explanations. Interviewers would like you to use reasonable assumptions. Silly assumptions such as “there are 100 billion people in the world” show that a candidate is out-of-touch, which minimizes the individual’s credibility with clients, executives, and co-workers. Furthermore, it would be polite to explain why you chose a particular assumption. Accuracy. Some estimations are the basis for decision-making. Thus, accuracy is important. But clearly, accuracy will improve if there is more time to work on it. Given an interview scenario, most interviewers would like candidates to spend at most 15 minutes and as little as 5 minutes on an estimation question. Use keywords that relate to your industry and your career, to make you as search-friendly as possible. If you add email or website urls, make sure theyre yours, not your employers. That way your bio/profile has longevity. Make it match. Take a few minutes and make sure your resume matches your LinkedIn profile, that your LinkedIn matches your Twitter profile, etc. This is not only excellent personal branding, its just common sense that youd want a polished, professional set of profiles that give a matching impression of your skills, expertise, and experience. The Extras These are the things you can do to make your Twitter account more engaging, extending your reach and piquing interest. Get the basics done first, so that you can properly capitalize on the difference the extras can make for your career. Use the header photo like a billboard for your personal brand. Change it out frequently (at least once a month) and make it relevant to you. Use photos that relate to your industry, your charity work, your career, and have fun with it. An architect can use blueprints, photos of job sites, copyright-free images of drafting tools, the possibilities are endless. DO make sure you dont use copyrighted images, or youll find yourself in legal hot water. Follow with care. Choose industry movers and shakers, your professional heroes, and colleagues who are important network connections. Start slow and build up your follows as you build followers. Someone who has 20 followers and follows 200 others isnt making good use of the tool. Keep your tweets professional and relevant. Save your political commentary, your spiritual thoughts, and your family chats for other media or accounts.
